Protologue citation: Vidensk. Meddel. Naturhist. Foren. Kjøbenhavn 1: 19 (1849)
A protologue is the original description of a species. It provides the naming context and diagnostic characters to compare when checking a plant’s identity. Other studies address their own research questions; their findings need to be read in that context before applying them to cultivation or the offered stock.

Reading the leaves of Monstera Deliciosa Albo
Leaf holes, leaf maturity and white variegation answer different buying questions. A study of Monstera deliciosa helps explain variation in leaf structure, while the details of this Albo plant still need to be checked against the offered specimen.

Leaf holes vary with the growing environment
Díaz-Valverde and colleagues measured one mature leaf from each of 20 plants in Costa Rica, with ten plants in sun and ten in shade. Sun leaves had a greater area of holes and denser stomata; the measured lobulation ratio did not differ between groups. (Díaz-Valverde et al., 2025)
For buyers: When comparing photographs, ask about the age of the shown leaf and the conditions in which it developed. The appearance of one mature leaf is not a fixed specification for every leaf a plant will produce.
Scope: This was an observational comparison of mature leaves, not a controlled indoor-light prescription or a guarantee that increasing sunlight will produce more holes.
Fenestration is not evidence of Albo stability
The study measures leaf structure and light-related differences in the species. It does not evaluate Albo variegation or the persistence of white markings through propagation. (Díaz-Valverde et al., 2025)
For buyers: For this listing, request current photographs of the actual leaves and stem, the growth point or node being supplied, and the plant’s rooting status. Treat the research as background for interpreting foliage.
Scope: The paper does not establish a white-leaf percentage, clone identity, or future variegation pattern for this SKU.
Putting the research into practice
When comparing two offers, consider fenestration, white markings and rooting separately. The study links differences in leaf holes to the environments of the sampled mature leaves. It therefore gives context for why foliage can differ between photographs, while an Albo purchase also depends on the actual stem, growth point and roots supplied. A photograph of a mature mother plant can document that plant’s foliage, but buyers still need photographs of the offered specimen to judge its current stage and condition. For cultivation, the sun–shade comparison is a reason to ask about the plant’s previous exposure. It does not provide a tested instruction to move an indoor Albo into direct sun or predict the markings of its next leaf.
