Identification, research and what to check before buying ↓Hoya lacunosa Blume · Apocynaceae
The accepted name in the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy, the plant taxonomic backbone.
Protologue citation: Blume. (1826). In: Bijdr. Fl. Ned. Ind. 1063.
A protologue is the original description of a species. It provides the naming context and diagnostic characters to compare when checking a plant’s identity. Other studies address their own research questions; their findings need to be read in that context before applying them to cultivation or the offered stock.

Choosing Hoya Lacunosa Silver with the right expectations
“Silver” is the supplier’s selection name for this listing. The research below concerns Hoya lacunosa as a species and helps explain why checking the plant’s identity takes more than looking at silver markings.

Leaf shape helps with a commonly confused name
Scott and Buot compared 30 mature leaves per species, including Hoya lacunosa and Hoya krohniana. Their leaf-lamina measurements separated the two samples mainly by leaf-base shape and angle; the venation characters they scored were inconclusive. (Scott & Buot Jr., 2022)
For buyers: When checking a labelled plant, request clear views of mature leaves, especially their bases. Silver patterning alone does not answer the identification question studied in this paper.
Scope: This study does not authenticate the “Silver” selection offered here. The venation characters examined were inconclusive; the authors recommend further work on higher-order venation and pollinaria. Their leaf-base differences do not by themselves authenticate the offered stock.
Confirm the selection separately from the species
The study examines species identification through leaf architecture. It does not test silver coverage, colour stability or how a named selection performs after propagation. (Scott & Buot Jr., 2022)
For buyers: Ask the desk to show the actual offered plant, its newer growth and the supplier’s propagation record. Those checks address what you are buying more directly than the existence of a species-level paper.
Scope: No silver percentage, cultivar registration or stability across future leaves is established by this citation.
Putting the research into practice
Compare the base of several mature leaves where the blade joins the stalk. In the study, Hoya lacunosa samples included wedge-shaped bases, while Hoya krohniana samples included heart-shaped and rounded bases; some characters overlapped. That makes the comparison useful as supporting evidence rather than a one-leaf identification test. The authors examined 30 leaves per species, which should not be interpreted as 30 independently sampled plants. Once the species question is considered, assess the Silver selection through current photographs and propagation records. Species identity and the amount of silver visible on the offered plant are separate decisions, and the paper resolves neither the selection’s future appearance nor the identity of a particular sale plant.

USDA APHIS Guidance (7 CFR 319.37)
Screening reflects general admissibility guidelines under USDA APHIS regulations. Actual entry requirements depend on current taxon manuals, port routing (such as PIS Miami, JFK, LAX), and permit category (PPQ 587). Buyer must verify applicable permit and labeling requirements with USDA APHIS or our export desk before ordering.
